August also means it’s a good time to feature that gorgeous gemstone known as peridot. Why, you may ask? Because it is the official birthstone for the month of August. But even if you don’t have a birthday this month and feel like splashing out a little, look no further! Peridot is one of only a few gemstones that always comes in one color – in this case, green. The shade can vary from yellow/olive to a brown/green, but it’s always a distinct natural, earthy green that we love, especially at this time of year. It’s a guardian stone known for its ability to protect the wearer from physical harm and mental imbalance and is associated with striving for life balance and relieving its wearer of stress and anxiety. How’s that for stone power? It’s also been found in meteorites, and traces of peridot have even been found on Mars!
While our stones definitely didn’t come from Mars, there’s a very good chance that they came from the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation in Arizona. This is the main modern source for peridot in the US, but it can also be found in other parts of the U.S., including in other parts of Arizona, Arkansas, Hawaii, Nevada, and New Mexico.
While peridot is perhaps a lesser-known gemstone than its more famous cousins, the emerald, sapphire or ruby, it packs a big punch. Whether worn alone or coupled with some sparkling diamonds, this stone is mesmerizing to look at. Its soothing green color puts us in exactly the right state of mind for August.
